Life in the North
Summary
The people in the North lived a faster paced life than the people in the South. Slavery was more common in the South and Northern agriculture became increasingly mechanized. Only about 40% of the Northern population was still engaged in agriculture by 1860, as compared to 84% in the South. Economic progress was creating a division between the North and South . For instance, the North produced 3,200 firearms to every 100 produced in the South. The people in the North began to believe that slavery was wrong and supported the abolitionist movement and the underground railroad.
