Long-Term Benefits of the the Civil War
Summary
There were some long term benefits of the Civil War. Some innovations made during the war that benefited the society are immediate care to wounds, female nurses, importance of sanitation, and antibiotics. Some military advances are the submarine and the minie bullet and the gatling gun. And some technological advances are the telegraph and photography. Some changes in the government structure is the Civil War gave birth to many of the pillars of the modern federal government. The government sold bonds for the first time and Congress approved the first national banking system. Government contracting exploded, with private companies supplying weapons and gunpowder. Congress authorized land grants for new universities, western settlers and a transcontinental railroad. Three key amendments to the Constitution adopted shortly after the war — abolishing slavery, guaranteeing equal protection and giving African Americans the right to vote — further cemented federal power. The nation was reunited and the southern states were not allowed to secede. The Federal government proved itself supreme over the states. Essentially this was a war over states rights and federalism and the victor was the power of the national government. Slavery was ended. While slavery was not officially outlawed until the passage of the 13th amendment, the slaves were set free upon the end of the war.
